Did you know that Florida was the nation's first wine producing state? Wine was being produced in Florida more than a hundred years before the pilgrims even landed in Massachusetts.

French Huguenots in the mid 1500's discovered the abundantly wild muscadine grapes growing near present day St. Augustine and other locations in northeast Florida. Using these grapes, they produced the first known wines in the New World.

The muscadine grape is very smooth and aromatic and grows in small clusters along its vines. Still quite common in the wild, muscadines can even be found in many Florida resident's back yards. Most of the grapes used in modern-day wine making though are hybrid varieties, many of which have been developed by researchers and scientists from Florida State University. Most of the hybrid varieties grow in a traditional cluster, making them easily identifiable from the original native grapes.

There are several major wineries operating in Florida, all of which are open for tours and tasting. The nearest to the Orlando area is The Lakeridge Winery and Vineyards, just 30 miles from the Disney area.

Chautauqua Vineyard
To the west in DeFuniak Springs, in Florida's Panhandle region, Chautauqua Vineyards has won dozens of wine medals since opening in 1989. Estate-grown grapes are used for a large line of muscadine wines and juices and a blueberry wine is also produced.

Dakotah Vineyards and Winery
Dakotah Vineyards and Winery in Chiefland is a family-owned business that opened in 1986. The winery offers five muscadine table wines, port, cream sherry and non-alcoholic muscadine grape juice.

Eden Vineyards and Winery
Eden Vineyards & Winery in Alva, near Fort Myers, is the oldest operating winery in Florida and the southernmost winery in the continental United States. Eden produces six wines from a vineyard that was started over 20 years ago.

Florida Orange Groves and Winery
Florida Orange Groves and Winery in St. Petersburg produces a line of wines without using one grape – all are made with pure Florida citrus fruits. Each bottle of their orange sunshine, grapefruit and tangerine wines have up to nine pounds of citrus fruit.

Lakeridge Winery and Vineyards
Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards near Clermont, just west of Orlando, is the largest wine producer in the state. The winery produces more than 50,000 cases of wine a year and has a large retail and tour operation for visitors. Lakeridge has about 70 acres planted with grapes, most of them the hybrid bunch grapes.

Rosa Fiorelli Winery
Rosa Fiorelli Winery near Bradenton was started by a family from Sicily. The rolling hills in Manatee County reminded them of their homeland and their attempts to grow grapes was a success. A business that started in their garage has expanded into a complete operation that includes on-site fermenting, bottling and retail sales.

San Sebastian Winery
In the historic city of St. Augustine, the San Sebastian Winery opened in 1996. It has several award-winning wines, including a sweet and fruity Vinters White, a light Rose and a semi-dry Blanc du Bois.

Three Oaks Winery
In Florida’s Panhandle region, the Three Oaks Winery in Vernon produces light, fruity red wines using another hybrid bunch grape, Conquistador, and white wines using the Carlos muscadine grape.
