Hang ten in the waters of Typhoon Lagoon. Or head to the beach and you'll
find some of the best surf spots in the southeast.
Surf Orlando
Give surfing a try in Orlando at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon water park. Have the
bay to yourself before the Park is open so that you can master the fine art of
shooting the curls. The world's largest wave machine produces surf every 90
seconds. The size of the waves can be adjusted up to six feet in height.
Professional instructors and small classes help anyone from a novice to a pro
improve form during a two-hour session.
Adventurous guests can catch a wave and feel like they're sitting on top of the
world as the 2.75-million-gallon wave pool provides consistent waves every 90
seconds that can range from three to six feet high -- and no sharks! Guests
learn from professional surfers how to cut, carve, and "hang 10." The program is
available for an extra charge on selected mornings from 6:30-9 a.m. (i.e. before
regular park hours). Call 407/WDW-PLAY for more information.
Surf the ocean
Orlando sits in between the east and west coasts of Florida. Head in either
direction and you'll find some of the best surf spots in the southeast.
The Space Coast, directly east of Orlando, features 72 miles of beaches with
towering waves rolling in. Areas on this stretch of coast include Sebastian
Inlet and Cocoa Beach. If you don't mind crowds, head north from the Space Coast
to Daytona. This famously busy beach is a haven for surf riders and beach
bunnies, with massive waves and a number of surf shops.
If you are interested in surfing the West Coast of Florida, conditions can be
variable. Big waves tend to come in bunches, and long flat spells are common.
There is also very little warning before larger waves come in. According to
Surfline, one of the world's premiere surfing news and information providers,
when it comes to Florida's Gulf Coast, the only way to know is to go. The best
spots in the Gulf area are in Clearwater, so simply take Interstate 4 west
toward Tampa, then hit Interstate 75 up to Clearwater. The drive takes about an
hour and a half.
