If you're thinking of a time-warp day, free of theme parks, then think about an escape to the New England of Florida, Mount Dora -  the antique capital as well as the rose capital of Central Florida.

Located 25 miles northwest of Orlando, via U.S. 441, Mount Dora is a lovingly preserved, frozen-in-time town (pop. 8,000) with a dozen turn-of-the-century buildings clustered around its downtown shuffleboard courts. Mount Dora is the historic heart of Lake County with no fewer than 1,400 lakes and a few gentle hills here and there, including the Mount of Dora, which soars to a peak of 184 feet.

"I climbed Mount Dora" T-shirts and bumper stickers are available at the chamber of commerce, located in one of the finest examples of adaptive restoration of discarded railroad depots in the country. Built in 1913 and decommissioned in 1950, when trains stopped whistling through this part of the state, it looks like it was lifted from someone's model train set, but it's your first stop in town and the place to contact for information.

At the chamber you can learn about special events and famous festivals: The artists arrive the first weekend in February; in April, antique boat enthusiasts gather at the marina (where there are charter boats and rentals available) the first weekend; and the sailors take over Lake Dora the second-to-last weekend for Florida's largest inland regatta; during the second-to-last weekend in October, cyclists rally for a celebration of the sport and all levels of touring. Also in October is one of the state's largest craft fairs plus an invitational golf tournament.

Gift shops, fashion boutiques, decorative art galleries, and interesting cafes - all within easy walking distance of each other and beautiful Lake Dora - reflect the taste of the owner. There are more than a dozen antique destinations in town plus the giant Renniger's Market on 441 at the edge of town, a marvelous magnet for hunters of antiques and collectibles of all kinds.

For Fun & Relaxation set sail on a sunset cruise, rent a bike, fish off a pier next to the inland light-house, enjoy the nature walk on Palm Island, or stroll around the neighborhoods enjoying the sunsets and the lake views. For those who like their fun less strenuous, an evening sunset cocktail at one of the outside cafes or on the porch of the Lakeside Inn is the thing.

Vintage rail excursions
The Mount Dora & Lake Eustis Railway is a tourist passenger railroad that runs from Mount Dora to Eustis in central Florida on the tracks of the Florida Central Railroad, operating on rails that date back to the 1880's.

Enjoy a one hour and 15 to 30 minute trip between Mount Dora and Tavares pulled by Herbie, a 1942 locomotive. Ride in streamlined stainless steel coaches dating from the 1940's on this 9 mile round trip. All cars are heated and air conditioned for your comfort.

You will depart from downtown Mount Dora traveling along the shore of Lake Dora, passing through an orange grove while following the route of historic Old Highway 441 before arriving at Wooton Park in Tavares. Listen to the whistle and bell of our engine as you cross railroad crossings. Wave to cars and travel right down the middle of the road with cars on both sides of the train. As you travel, your conductor will fill you in on the railroad history of the track you are riding on, the historic cars you are riding in, and point out the interesting sites along the way.
