Lake Louisa State Park consists of approximately 4,500 acres and includes 6
lakes, 2 streams, 10 natural communities, and 105 acres of Lake Shoreline. The
park affords some of the best views in Central Florida and is being transformed
into a showcase park for upland restoration and recreational facilities.
The park's massive sandhill restoration has already begun with the removal of
over 500 acres of orange trees and the planting of approximately 500,000
longleaf pines. The sandhill community is a rare upland community that is home
to many of Central Florida's most threatened animal species such as the Gopher
Tortoise and Sherman Fox Squirrel. By restoring and preserving the sandhills we
help to protect Florida's water quality. This precious habitat also serves as a
primary recharge area for the Florida Aquifer.
A Special Park Resident
The sandhills are home to the Gopher Tortoise, a species of special concern due
to habitat loss. The tortoise is known as a keystone or umbrella species, which
means their home and habits, has a direct effect on hundreds of other species
that are native to Florida. Lake Louisa State Park has one of the highest
densities of Gopher Tortoises in the state of Florida. From spring till fall
tortoises can be seen throughout the park during the warm sunny days dining on
grasses, prickly-pear cactus and other low herbaceous plants. Because of its
protected status it is unlawful to molest, injure, or kill Gopher Tortoises.
Here at Lake Louisa we try to inform the public on the value of protecting and
providing refuge for Florida's only land tortoise. With restoration and
preservation of the sandhills the population will continue to thrive.
History & Culture
One of the first families to settle most of the land surrounding Lake Louisa was
the Hammonds. John and Louise Hammond named their property the Hammond's Landing
and it consisted of turpentine still, sawmill, shingle mill, combined school and
church, commissary, worker's cabin, cooperage, and their house. The family made
money by exporting the goods they made such as railroad ties, shingles,
turpentine, and timber, which was shipped out of Lake Louisa by way of
steamboats or barges. In the 1940's the Bronson family acquired some property in
which they established orange groves and cattle ranches. Evidence of these
agricultural resources can still be seen today in the park from the remaining
orange groves and many acres of old pastureland.
History still resurfaces itself today with the recent discovery of Lt. Gilmore's
crashed WW 11 plane, found in Lake Louisa during the 2001 drought period. While
here at the park you can see and read about the discovery at Lake Louisa beach.
A monument has been built in his honor.
