Situated on the Bayboro Harbor in downtown St. Petersburg, the Salvador Dali Museum is home to the world's most comprehensive collection of works by the late Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali.

Donated to the city of St. Petersburg by A. Reynolds Morse and his wife Eleanor, the collection represents the culmination of a 45 year friendship between the Morses and Dali. From 1971 to 1980 the Morses displayed their collection in an office building in Beachwood, Ohio. They ultimately realized the collection had outgrown its space, so they sought out a new home for their treasures. Their ultimate goal was to donate the collection to a tourist-oriented community, in order to enhance the exposure of Dali's works. St. Petersburg seemed a logical choice. The Salvador Dali Museum was dedicated on March 10, 1982.

The collection is grouped chronologically, in galleries devoted to different periods of Dali's life, and features excellent examples from Dalí's four major periods - Early (1917-1927), Transitional (1928), Surreal (1929-1939), and Classic (1940-1970s). Dali is well known for his surrealist pieces and masterworks, which are both well represented in this collection. Dali considered a masterwork any piece that took more than a year to complete and measures at least five feet in any one direction.

With oils spanning from 1917 through 1970, the collection provides an excellent overview of Dalí's major themes and symbols. Characterized by its diversity, it includes the Impressionist and Cubist styles of his early period, abstract work from his transition to Surrealism, the famous surrealist canvases for which he is best known, and examples of his preoccupation with religion and science during his classic period.

In addition to the 95 oil paintings, the collection includes over 100 watercolors and drawings, 1,300 graphics, photographs, sculptures and objects d'art, and an extensive archival library. Periodic rotations of the collection and special exhibitions allow museum goers to view new work on repeat visits.
