Celebration is a town built from the ground up to Disney's standards. Located just south of Highway 192 from Walt Disney World, Celebration is a very pleasant place to spend part of a day. It is a planned community built on a foundation of cornerstones: Community, Education, Health, Technology, and a Sense of Place. Disney used the services of top-name architects in developing the plans for Celebration, which includes a downtown, health center, school, post office, town hall, golf course, single family homes, townhouses and apartments.

In November 1996, 350 people became the first residents of the town, built by the Disney Corporation on swampland in Osceola County, Florida, next to its World Resort. This model town is now a thriving community, with a projected population of 20,000. The early brochures for Celebration immodestly described it as a massive project in social engineering, an attempt to recreate the kinder, gentler America of the past: ‘There was once a place where neighbors greeted neighbors in the quiet of summer twilight … There is a place that takes you back to that time of innocence … A place of caramel apples and cotton candy, secret forts, and hopscotch on the streets.’

All the houses in the town are of traditional southeastern design, with clapboard exteriors, pastel colours, front porches and picket fences. The town is thus an extended, real-life version of Main Street, the centrepiece of all the Disney theme parks, which reproduces a ‘typical’ Midwestern American street at the end of the nineteenth century, complete with ice cream parlour, theatre and candy store.

Market Street is themed as a traditional retail and business district in small-town America. Currently there are retail shops, restaurants, the town hall, a post office, a grocery store, offices, a cinema, and a hotel. The Market Street area is compact enough that no matter where you park, it is easy to cover the entire area on foot.

One popular reason to visit is to enjoy a good meal in one of the excellent restaurants in Celebration. The very popular Market Street Café, themed as an upscale 1950s-style diner, serves delicious food at reasonable prices. Eating outdoors on the sidewalk is a very pleasant option when the weather is nice, and the lake is directly across the street.

Café D'Antonio is a fine Italian restaurant, winner of a Zagat award and praised by the Orlando Sentinel reviewers as "a celebration of fine Italian dining." They offer daily specials and an extensive selection of wine during both lunch and dinner.

Town Center Lake is visible from almost everywhere in the Market Street area, and is a peaceful setting for a leisurely stroll. Children enjoy playing in the nearby fountain, just as they do in similar fountains within Walt Disney World. A limited supply of boats are available for rent, and rocking chairs are set along the promenade.
